October 2010: by the Kids
Auriana
I’m having a good time in my first year of high school. I really like choir class, and I am excited for out Christmas show that is coming up. We have lots of rehearsals for our shows, and I get really exhausted, but they turn out really great. I’m having fun in Young Women’s and in completing my Personal Progress. One of the projects that I’m working on is taking over this year’s family history book about my Great-Grandpa Bjorndal, who I never got to meet.
Isaac
I went on a campout. It was awesome but it was freezing! I could barley put away my sleeping bag with out freezing my hands off, but after it warmed up, we shot clay pigeons. I went to St. George and trick-or-treated there with my friends. We hunted lizards with bb guns and we hiked the red rocks, I had a great time. We stayed there from Thursday to Sunday.
Natalie
I am having a really fun time in 5th grade, and I got to take keyboarding and I had the fastest speed in my class, I can type 58 wpm! I finished soccer up and my team got 1st place, even though we were the youngest! We won every game except for one, which we tied 0 to 0, nobody scored on us the whole season. For my birthday I had a soccer party and I just invited my soccer team. We had lots of fun! We had a juggling contest and I won, I can juggle 50!
Enoch
I am in 2nd grade and it is really fun. We had a primary program and I had the longest part in the whole entire primary.
Miriam
I am in 1st grade and it is really fun. My teacher’s name is Miss Hutchings.
I like her. I have a friend named Isabelle and I play with her every day.
Her sister’s name is Aunika. I play with her every day too, and I have a lot of friends.

It was snowing this week and we got hot chocolate at home. I made yummy soup at school.

Becky…
We’ve had a nice fall without TOO MUCH going on. The kids are enjoying the last few weeks of warm weather and spending a lot of time outside.
Ellie loves going to preschool and she’s learning a lot and making new friends. She loves to sit at the piano and figure out little tunes, like “We Thank Thee Oh God for a Prophet,” and she loves to prance around the house doing Irish Dance steps. She seemed so grown up as I watched her and Katelyn having a great time together this weekend. She has adjusted just fine to being home alone with me during the day – she’s just as happy as ever doing whatever.
Miriam is doing great in school and loves it! After scripture reading every morning, she gets ready fast, packs her lunch, practices the piano, usually brushes her own hair, and then has to wait for the others to be ready, before they all hop on their bikes and ride to school. She’s very self motivated to do her chores and homework quickly, and then spends her free time playing the piano, riding her bike, coloring, or playing with Ellie. She and Ellie both look forward to when Brenda comes so that they can chop things with her in the kitchen.
At parent/teacher conference, Enoch’s teacher told me he was a keeper. The baptism day yesterday was wonderful. We appreciated all of your support & encouragement to Enoch on his important day. I truly enjoyed the day, but even more than that, I enjoyed watching Enoch look forward to and prepare for his special day. He has been so excited and eager, and I can tell he has grown-up a lot throughout the whole process. He is obviously trying hard to read his scriptures, pray, fast, and do all of those things that the big people do.
Natalie’s only complaint is on a day when she doesn’t have homework. She’s not too keen on housework, but she loves homework! She also loves soccer and Irish dance, and doesn’t seem to ever get tired. Her soccer team is in 1st place right now, with only one more season game. She plays sweeper and never-ever subs out. With her birthday right around the corner, she’s looking forward to turning eleven and hoping to get a new bike like Enoch did. She’s still baking & selling a lot of bread and saving a lot of money.
Isaac loves Junior High – he has had a great time this year so far. Boy’s PE is a new experience for him and he has had a blast playing sports in a less competitive environment. “Just for fun” is so much more fun I think!! He’s been playing basketball with Bjorn and the other Elders in our ward and also reading a couple of books a week. He has taken up the drums in the junior high band and is still trying to decide whether he likes it or not. Chad was so kind to take all the boys this morning and help Isaac collect fast offerings. The deacons really needed Isaac’s help, but he was torn between that and spending one last hour with his cousins. Thanks to Chad he was able to do both.
Auriana is thriving in High School. She’s staying right on top of her grades and seems to enjoy her classes more this year. I guess you can’t complain if your teacher asks you to eat a candy bar as part of a science experiment. Auriana would still rather be reading than doing most anything else, but she has made a lot of progress in her “personal progress” for Young Women lately. For one project she’s working on a family history book about her Great-Grandpa Bjorndal, and for another one she’s doing baptisms for the dead once a month for the rest of this year.

We had a wonderful day yesterday with Enoch’s baptism & confirmation. He was so excited the whole month of September and couldn’t believe it when the day finally came. He seems like he has grown up so much in the last few months. Becky and I have enjoyed some good discussions with him and are grateful for his understanding of what it means to be baptized and confirmed. There was such a wonderful spirit throughout the service. Thank you to all who participated. I know it was an experience Enoch will always remember. You wish you could get inside their minds and hearts and see what they’re thinking and feel what they’re feeling, but of course that’s not possible. We’re grateful to many of you for being there and wish all of you could have come, but understand that’s not always possible because of busy schedules or long distances to travel.
Natalie played her second-to-last soccer game the morning of the baptism and beat the team they were tied with for first place. So now they’re all alone in the first place spot with one game left in the season. What makes that even more significant is that they’re a “U11” team (meaning the girls turn 11 during the year) playing in a “U12” league (girls that turn 12 this year), so they’re 5th graders playing against 6th graders and they’re still winning all their games. And even more impressive, they have not been scored on in any game, thanks in large part to Natalie’s awesome defensive play as the “sweeper” – also known as center fullback. After the game yesterday, Natalie’s coach said to me, “You know we would probably have at least 20 goals scored on us if it wasn’t for Natalie. We sure feel lucky to have found her.” Natalie has really enjoyed being on this accelerated team and has made some good friends in the process. For her birthday party she is going to invite the entire team and have a soccer birthday party.
Enoch had a soccer birthday party too. He invited his entire soccer team plus about 8 other friends and it was total chaos and total fun. Auriana had a fun party too, taking her friends ice skating. I can’t believe she’s 14 years old. She is such a beautiful young woman. We went to a “Utah Old Time Fiddlers” competition down in Richfield a couple weeks ago and while she was up on stage performing I just thought to myself, “Wow, she is such a beautiful and talented young lady. That’s my daughter!” And she ended up taking 2nd place and got a cool hand-carved trophy shaped like a mandolin and $30 prize money. Isaac also took 2nd place in the competition and got a hand-carved trophy shaped like a guitar and $30. Natalie came in 6th, but had about 3 times as many people to compete with. I was proud of all three of them for competing and doing so well. It was a fun family trip.
